The Office Administration module is linked to a financial training course with Executive Accountant Wendy Alexander who has been training the 13 students from Platfontein on Saturday mornings from 9am to 1pm. These Saturday classes will continue until the end of August, as Financial Accounting and Administration is a critical skill for the students to learn with competence. Applied Excel linked to Wendy's financial training course, which constists of basic accounting for small businesses. A 300 page mannual is provided by the company Pastel with the Software Programme that is being used in the classes.
Currently, the course has expanded into Technical Training on Harware and Software Applications how to programme and Network, with the objective in July of preparing 30 computers and two servers that will be transported and used in Platfontein. The test scores on the techincial side have ranged from many getting 100% and in the high 90's to some that have achieved 86% and afew in the 70% percentile, some lower results at 53% and one test result at 40%. The lower scores are due to the language barrier, as some students arrived with little knowledge of English and have had to work even harder to grasp the English language in order to pass the exams with clear and concise understanding.
English Skills Oral and Written have improved remarkably and all of the students with great effort have contually tried to use English rather than their home languages of the Kwe or Ixun, Afrikaans being a second language and Englsih their third. The students have tried their best to over come the stark hurdle of being non English speakers, with great amazement they are coming along very well, the weakest English speakers are making the greatest effort with considerable gains.
Congratulations to the Youth of Platfontein! We are very proud of you!
